Georgia sites help keep Jimmy Carter’s spirit alive

Reflections on the legacy of former President Jimmy Carter, who died Dec. 29 at age 100, have been constant during the past few days. There have been tributes and acknowledgements of his national and worldwide contributions from world leaders, people who knew him best, and average Americans.

Georgians do not have to venture far to gain a deeper understanding of the 39th president’s passions as well as his accomplishments before, during, and after his time in the White House. The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, located on John Lewis Freedom Parkway in Atlanta, is situated on 30 acres of park land surrounded by two lakes and with Atlanta’s skyline in the distance.

It is here that researchers come to delve into the archives, a repository of “approximately 27 million pages of Jimmy Carter’s White House material, papers of administration associates, including documents, memoranda, correspondence, etc. There are also 1/2 million photographs, and hundreds of hours film, audio and video tape,” states the library’s website.

But one doesn’t have to be a researcher to find treasure here. At the museum, there’s a wealth of information and experiences that visitors are likely to appreciate
