Brookhaven reduces speed limits on main thoroughfares
Brookhaven, GA, June 10, 2025 – Brookhaven commuters should ease off the gas pedals on several main thoroughfares, starting immediately.
Today, Mayor John Park took down the last 35 MPH speed limit sign on Dresden Drive and replaced it with a 25 MPH sign.
Within the next few weeks, other roads will have reduced speed limits:
“The Dresden Drive Corridor in District 2 is a very tight and dense live-work-play community, and cars and pedestrians are very close together. I’m glad we could address the residents’ concerns for a little slower and safer route through this area,” said District 2 Councilwoman Jennifer Owens.
In May 2024, Brookhaven established the Dresden District, a corridor entertainment district in which one can purchase an alcoholic beverage from a participating restaurant or bar and walk within the open spaces in that area.
The changes in the speed limits are in response to resident concerns of excessive speeds on Brookhaven roads. In Dec. 2024, the Brookhaven City Council approved the proposal to lower speed limits on four major City roads. Official approval for the change was received in June 2025 from the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
For the week preceding the speed limit change, lighted message signs were stationed on Dresden Drive advising of the upcoming change and will remain in place for another week reminding commuters that the speed limit has changed. Brookhaven Police will issue warnings instead of citations for the first 30 days following the change.
“The same method of communicating the speed limit changes will be implemented on each of the upcoming roads over the next few weeks,” said Brookhaven Public Works Director Jorge Gomez.
“This is an important step toward our ultimate goal of making streets safer for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and residents along these corridors,” said District 1 Councilmember Michael Diaz, where the remaining speed limit changes will be implemented. “Residents in my district have made it clear that this is a top quality-of-life priority.”
Additional signage and flashers have also been installed on Caldwell Road near Ashford Park Elementary School.
